Our Background

Since 1978, The SPEC Association for Children and Families has been providing a variety of supportive, preventive, educational, and counseling services for children and families in Brooks and throughout the County of Newell. Since then, SPEC has evolved into a multi-faceted agency with programs and services that provide support to each level of the family unit including infants, children, youth, and adults.

SPEC’s programs include:

LINKS Community Information Centre – promotes healthy families and communities by linking people, ideas, and resources and facilitates services and activities in response to community needs

ParentLINKcentre - connecting parents and supporting the healthy
development of children ages 0-12 through a variety of unique and fun activities.

Connections - provides services for students ages 13-19 to build leadership and resiliency.

Family Support Program - provides a variety of contracted services for children and families via the Southeast Alberta Child and Family Services Authority


Types & Nature of Work

There are a variety of career opportunities available at
SPEC in the following areas:
• Early Childhood Development
• Information Referral and Support
• Leadership and Resiliency Counseling
• In-Home Family Support
• Child and Youth Work
• Administration


Ideal Candidate Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in the field of Human Services (equivalencies may be considered)
• Experience working with children, families, and volunteers
• First Aid certification
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Problem-solving skills
• Computer skills
• Child and Youth Intervention Module
• Criminal Record Check
• Clean Driver’s Abstract



Training Opportunities

The following on-the-job training is provided to all employees
(additional job-specific and off-site training may also be provided depending on the position):
• Anti-racism training
• Suicide intervention training
• Working alone safety instruction


Hours, Pay, Benefits

Positions at SPEC may be full time, part time, or casual. Seasonal (summer) opportunities also exist.
Shift work may be required depending on the position and includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Office hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Program hours vary.
